An analysis of illocutionary act in the talk show `The Tonight Show: Starring Jimmy Falon`
Illocutionary act is the speaker intention regarding what act they expect to perform by making their utterance. When the speaker utters something in an appropriate context and certain intention it always content one or more illocutionary acts. When we produce some utterances, we do not just produce the form, but we also have an intention in our mind in saying our utterance. This research aims to analyse the illocutionary act in talk show. The researcher chose talk show because it has natural setting. In talk show, they speak uses their daily language. So, it also can be used to add our references in speaking. In this study, the researcher chose "The Tonight Show: Starring Jimmy Falon" to be analysed.
This study use descriptive qualitative design. The researcher collected the from "The Tonight Show" YouTube channel. It was the newest video uploaded by the channel and the researcher took video with the most viewers. The researcher also takes the script of video so it will be easier to analyse the data. The researcher found 67 data from the video. The researcher classifies the utterances in that show into type and function of illocutionary act.
The researcher uses the different theory to analyse the data. First, the researcher uses Searle's theory to analyse the type of illocutionary act. There are five classification proposed by Searle. Those are representative, directive. commissive, expressive, and declarative. In this study the researcher did not find declarative type. Then, to analyse the function of illocutionary act, the researcher use Leech's theory. He proposed 4 function of illocutionary act. Those are collaborative, competitive, convivial, and conflictive.
The result of this research shows that in this talk show there is no declarative types because declarative can be stated by someone who has institutional role. So, it does not match with the theme of this talk show. Then the most frequent type used in this research is representative with 29 utterances or 43% from the data. After that, in this study there are 4 function of illocutionary act. The most frequent function found in this research is collaborative with 41 utterances or 61% of the data.
