The effect of vocabulary mastery on reading comprehension with reading strategy as intervening variable
The study aim is to discuss the effect of vocabulary mastery on reading comprehension which presented direct correlation or indirect correlation with the reading strategy as mediating variable. The research design of this study is descriptive quantitative method which is helped by path analysis. The instruments of this study are reading strategy questionnaire which is adapted, vocabulary mastery test and reading comprehension test. The object of this study is the students of English Department of IAIN Kedin. The participants were students who took from the fourth semester which study reading academic as their major.
The researcher conducted path analysis to know the correlation pattern of variables and it will be showed by path diagram. The function is for the problem's concept which is complicated, and to know empiric implication of the theory that is studied. Based on the research finding and discussion, there is significant positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading strategy. The effect of vocabulary mastery on reading strategy is 0,528 or 52,8%. There is significant positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension Vocabulary gave effect 0,935 or 93.5% There is significant negative correlation between reading strategy and reading comprehension. That is -0,562 or -52,6% There is significant positive correlation among vocabulary mastery, reading strategy and reading comprehension. The result shows that the value is 0,636 or 63,6%
For path analysis, the researcher got the result which showed significant negative. It means that reading strategy does not intervene the effect of vocabulary mastery on reading comprehension as indirect effect. The value presented that the effect of vocabulary mastery on reading comprehension with reading strategy as intervening variable is -0,296 or -29,6%
