Analysis on illocutionary act in Todd Phillip`s Joker movie
Speech act is one of discussion in pragmatics that discusses the relationship between utterance and action. Speech act is divided into three; locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. The illocutionary act became the subject of this research considered the importance of this between two other speech acts, especially as a student majoring in language. Joker chosen as the object of this research because the movie was gets a lot of attention from movie lovers and carries an interesting theme and plot.
The objectives of this study are to identify the types of illocutionary acts in Joker's main character dialogues and identify the meanings of the illocutionary act utterances. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design. The researcher analyzed and classified the Joker's main character dialogues according to the illocutionary act classifications in Searle's theory, then described the meaning of each utterance that included in the illocutionary act. Analysis of each utterance carried out by looking at surrounding aspect such as actions, expressions and situations.
As the result of the study, the researcher found that all five subtypes of the illocutionary act appeared in the Joker's main character dialogues form in 44 utterances. Illocutionary acts that appear are; representative (assumption, agreeing, denying, asserting, complaining and stating) as much as 52.3%, directive (commanding, asking, begging and requesting) as much as 25%, commissive (agreeing and refusing) as much as 4.5%, expressive (thanking and apologizing) as much as 16% and declarative (declaring) as much as 2.2%
