The use of STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) to improve students` writing skill on personal letter at SMAN 2 Kediri
Writing is one of skills that should be mastered by the students in learning English. The goal of writing is the students are able to write in good sentences. This research involved qualitative study especially CAR (Classroom Action Research). The aim of this study was to improve students' writing skill through STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) as teaching method. This research was conducted in SMAN 2 Kediri which is located at
Veteran Street No.7 Mojoroto, Kediri, East Java. The research subjects were twenty six students in XI MIPA 5 at SMAN 2 Kediri. The data of this study was collected by using test, observation sheet, and field note. The objective of this research was to know and explain how STAD (Student Teams Achievement Division) can improve students' writing skill on personal letter at SMAN 2 Kediri. This research consisted of two cycles. The result of cycle I showed that there were elevent students who did not pass the Test II It was because some students were not interested to do their assignment, they do not ask to their teacher or discuss with their friend in a group if they got difficulty and some of them wrote personal letter with a small number of words. It means that criteria of success do not reached yet and the researcher continue to the next cycle. In the cycle II the reseacher explained more about the material and asked the students to discuss with their team about the correction related with the common mistakes they used in writing. The result of cycle II showed that twenty six students pass the Test III. The students more paid attention, enjoyed, active, and participate during learning process.
The result of students' writing skill improvement was supported by the result of the test score. The mean score of every test in each cycle showed the improvement. The improvement can be seen from the mean score was 73.30 in Test I improved into 77.66 in Test II and improved into 89.61 in Test III. From the observation, the researcher founded that the students got improvement after conducted STAD in learning process. The students have more attention to the teacher's instruction and they wanted to ask their problems in writing such as understanding material, grammar, and vocabularies. The result of the research showed that STAD (Students Team Achievement Division) could improve students' writing skill on personal letter at eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Kediri
