The effectiveness of using short comics as a media in teaching reading comprehension to students of SMAN 5 Taruna Brawijaya Kediri
Reading is the process of constructing meaning from a piece of text. There are several problems faced by students in understanding the meaning of word and they cannot understand the point and intention of the text which they have read, and also students have less motivation to read the ordinary text. Teachers have to find alternative way to give this lesson to the students. This research was aimed to determine the effectiveness of using short comics as a media in teaching reading comprehension.
This research was a quasi-experimental research which involved two groups. The sample of the research were two classes of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Taruna Brawijaya Kediri there were XI MIPA 1 as a experimental group that using short comics and XI MIPA 4 as a control group that using conventional method. The data were in the form of quantitative data and they were taken from pretest before having treatment for each classes and post test after having treatment for each classes. The data were analyzed by using ANCOVA in SPSS 21 version for windows.
The findings revealed that the mean score of experimental group before being treated is 37.98 then the mean score of experimental group after being treated is 83.13. From the statistic result value shows .000 which is lower than probability value 05 (.000 < .05). According to that statistic value, the researcher concludes that teaching reading comprehension using short comics as a media is effective because there is a significant effect of using short comics in teaching reading comprehension.
