Speaking is an oral communication that is used to express ideas, feelings, and thought among people. In teaching speaking, there are several things that must be done to improve students' speaking skill. The teacher must be able to be a facilitator for students in learning activities in a classroom. Many students are easy to get bored in facing English, especially toward speaking. The picture series is expected to be able to help the students in their speaking. The aim of this research is to determine the effectiveness of using picture series in teaching speaking for the first grade students at MAN 5 KEDIRI.
The design of this research was quasi-experimental. The population was the students of class X in MAN 5 Kediri. The samples were two classes experimental and control groups. The experimental group was class X IPS 4 consisting of 36 students and the contol group was class X IIK consisting of 35 students. The experimental group applied picture series as their learning techniques and the control group applied roleplay. There are two kinds of test which are administered to the students in both groups namely pre-test and post test. The purpose is to determine the students' speaking skill before and after treatment.
This research used the Mann Whitney U Test because the result of Kolmogorov-Smirnov analysis on the pretest was not normal, then the hypothesis test must use Nonparametic Tests. The homogeneity variences of pre-test is 0.916 (>0.05) and post test is 0.355 (> 0.05). The Mann Whitney U Test showed that the significant value is 0.001. It is lower than the significant level (0.001
