The rhetoric and linguistic features of qualitative and quantitative research abstract articles
Thesis abstract is important because it represents outline of the whole thesis Thesis abstract is concise, but it should be informative. For knowing informative abstract, the readers should consider about rhetorical moves in it. Rhetorical move is a series of brief information about the whole research that parted as introduction, purpose, method, product, and conclusion. The objectives of this research are (1) to find out the move found in qualitative and quantitative research article abstract, and (2) to describe the pattern of rhetoric structure found in qualitative and quantitative research article abstract
This study is a qualitative research since this study was focusing on the total description rather than breaking it down into variables. The design of this research is genre analysis. There are 50 qualitative and 50 quantitative research article abstracts from DOAJ were investigated in this research The abstracts were analyzed using Santos's (1996) theory of rhetorical structure. The research was done as natural as possible to observe the abstract component in RA abstracts
The results of the study showed that: (1) There are 33 (66%) qualitative RA abstracts which include the move I in the abstracts In addition, there are 19 (38%) quantitative RA abstracts which include the move 1. Furthermore, there are 50 (100%) qualitative and quantitative RA abstracts include move 2, 3, and 4 in the abstract. On the other hand, there are 13 (26%) qualitative abstracts and 20 (40%) quantitative abstracts include move 5 in the abstract writing; (2) The qualitative abstract was more complex and informative than the quantitative abstracts. It can be seen from the number of the move used in the abstracts. In addition, most of quantitative abstracts only use move 2,3, and 4 in the abstracts, which means, most of the quantitative abstracts only tell the reader about the purpose, the methodology of the study, and the result without leading the topic, giving review on the previous studies to the readers and discussing the research through conclusion and recommendation.
