An Analysis of Discourse Markers Used in Novel The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Discourse analysis is a way of describing and understanding how language is used. This study focuses on discourse markers. Discourse markers is an expression that signals the relationship of the basic message to the foregoing discourse (Fraser 1996, p.186). The purpose of this study are to analyze the types of discourse markers that are uttered by the characters in novel "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" and to know the meaning of discourse markers words in sentences that classified into those types of discourse markers. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data are word, phrase, sentences within the dialogues of the novel "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" which contain discourse. markers. To collect the data, the researcher does some steps first, read the novel, then identify and determine the types of discourse marker and show the meaning of each sentences that classified into those types of discourse markers. The findings of this research are the discourse markers in the novel consist of four types of discourse markers according to Frasers' theory (2006). The first type is contrasitive discourse markers, the second type is elaborative discourse markers, the third type is inferential discourse markers, and the fourth type is temporal discourse markers. There are four meaning of discourse markers words: 27 statements are classified as contrasitive discourse markers because they indicates contrastive words, 38 statements are classified as elaborative discourse markers because they indicates connecting word and adverb, 7 statements are classified as inferential discourse markers because they indicates as conclussion word and also 27 statements are classified as temporal markers because they indicates as adverb of time and conjunction. Among the four types of discourse markers, one is mostly used in this novel is elaborative discourse markers. Its because the frequency of this type was 38 times.
