Developing Character Building-based English Storybook for Indonesian EFL. Young Learners. Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training
The objective of the research was to develop appropriate character building-based English storybook that is able to be a tool to support students' literacy media as well as English proficiency. This was a Research and Development (R&D) study. The procedure of the research followed the story book design process proposed by Borg and Gall (2003). The stages was modified in order to meet the need of the study. The modified model consisted of seven stages 1) Need analysis, 2) Development product, 3) Expert validation, 4) First revision, 5) Field testing, 6) second revision, 7) final product. The subjects of the research were72students of grade four and 2 teachers of SDN 2 Burengan and SDN Banjaran 5 Kediri. The data of this study were in the form of qualitative and quantitative data The qualitative data were obtained from and interviews purposed to cross-checking the existence of literacy program. The quantitative data were obtained from the questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to the experts and students in order to assess the storybook. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics
The product of the research is a character building-based English storybook. Based on the assessments and responses of the expert validations and the students, it can be concluded that the storybook is appropriate as atool to support literacy program especially fourth grade elementary school students. The score shown by the evaluators is 3,09. It is in the range of 25 sx5324 meaning that the storybook is categorized "Good" Meanwhile, the mean score of the students is 3,48. It places in the range of 3 245x54 which is belonged to "Very Good". The conclusionof the results showed that the story book is appropriate as a tool to support literacy program of elementary school of grade 4.
