An Analysis of Politeness Principles Used by the Main Characters in "The Giver" Novel by Lois Lowry
In communication process, politeness becomes one of the important things. By using politeness between speaker and hearer, the situation in communication will be effective. People can learn about politeness through novel. This study analyzed novel and focused on politeness principles used by à characters in The Giver Novel. Story of The Giver novel is the reflection of politeness principles, because it tells about the future life, everything is under control and one of the rules is using precise words. So, the main characters are very careful about language choice. People can learn about how to communicate well through it, and also apply it in their life. Therefore, this study is indented to find the types of politeness principles and politeness principle commonly used by main characters in The Giver Novel by Lois Lowry.
The research method in this study is descriptive qualitative, the researcher used document analysis. The data were from The Giver novel, in the form of words, phrases, and sentences stated by the main characters. The main characters were Jonas and The Giver. The writer also adopted Politeness Principles' theory proposed by Geoffrey Leech (1983) to analyze the data.
This study reveals that Jonas and The Giver applied six types of politeness principles namely, tact maxims (13,4%), generosity maxims (16,1%), approbation maxims (11,6%), modesty maxims (16,9%), agreement maxims (27,7 %), and sympathy maxims (14,3 %). So, the total of that data was 112 politeness principles. The type of politeness principles which was the most commonly used by main characters in The Giver Novel was agreement maxim (27,7%).
Further study about politeness can be conducted by adding the scale of politeness principles, and the next researcher also can analyze politeness strategies or politeness principles in the translation novel, the structure and culture more detail to create deeper analysis.
