The Effectiveness of Using KWL Strategy in Teaching Reading Comprehension to the Eleventh Graders of MA Ar Rosyaad Balong Ringinrejo
Indonesian students have difficulties in learning English especially reading because English is not their first language. The problem is that reading is not an easy skill to master as it is thought and reading is a complicated process. This research aims to know whether using KWL strategy is effective in teaching reading comprehension.
The research design of this study is a quasi-experimental. The subject of the research is the students at the eleventh grade of MA Ar Rosyaad, class XI IIS.1 and XI IIS.2. Every group consists of 20 students. The researcher took XI IIS.1 as the experimental group and XI IIS.2 as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using KWL strategy while the control group was taught by using teaches explanation. In this study, the researcher gave pre-test and post-test to both groups. Then, the result of the test was calculated by using ANCOVA.
The result of the statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the obtained significant value was (p) 0.000< 0.05. Since the obtained significant value was smaller than 0.05, statistically there was enough evidence to reject H0, then H1 was accepted. It means that the students who were taught by using KWL strategy has significantly better reading skill on recount text than student who taught by using teacher explanation. Therefore, it is suggested to the teacher to use this strategy as an alternative in improving students’ reading skill on recount text.
