A Transitivity Analysis on Reading Section In English in Focus Textbook
Textbook played important roles in English language teaching. An
evaluation of English textbook was needed to make sure the appropriate of
English textbook for students. The textbook should be not only value based
on visual illustration but also based on their language feature. This research
aimed to analyze the transitivity of genres that is used by English in focus
textbook.
This study used a descriptive qualitative design. The researcher
analyses the types of transitivity analysis based on Halliday’s theory of
systemic functional linguistics by using checklist worksheet. In collecting
data, this study were collected from the reading section of some titles in the
textbook of every genre. The researcher’s’ knowledge of transitivity system
was the key instrument. As supplementary tools of the instrument, forms of
data sheet were used during the research analysis. Besides, triangulation
technique was used to get dependability of data through expert judgment.
The researcher found that the characterized process types and
participant function were material process (63,72%) and its participant
named actor (27.54%) and goal (26.34%). It becomes the most dominance
percentage of three genres by the textbook. Meanwhile, the characterized
circumstantial elements is place-location (44.64%), which becomes the
most dominance percentage. This finding is supported by Halliday’s theory.
