IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION SKILL THROUGH THINK ALOUD STRATEGY
Reading is one of the important aspects in learning English. It has a
positive effect on the students’ knowledge. The success of teaching depends on
the teaching strategy applied. This study aimed at figuring out the improvement of
students’ reading skills at MTs Negeri 1 Kunir Blitar upon being taught by using
think aloud strategy.
Classroom action research design is used along with think aloud strategy
at seventh grade students of MTs Negeri 1 Kunir on the second semester in 2017.
It is applied on class 7, which consists of 32 students. The material used in this
research is descriptive text. The researcher conducted this study in assistance of
english teacher to solve the problems in the classroom under studied. Every cycle
consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting
Upon applying think aloud strategy, in cycle 1, the average score of the
students was 66,95 in which it is still below the criteria of success set up in this
study, which is 70. From cycle 1, there were 8 students got very good score,
which are 70-75 and 24 students got good score, which are 60-65. The researcher
still uses think aloud strategy, in cycle 2 its not satisfactory due to some factors.
The researcher believes that think aloud strategy makes students more interested
in reading. The average score of the students in cycle 2 is 75,15, in which it
already meets the criteria of success. There were 25 students’ has very good score
which are 75-85, and 7 students got good score which are 70. The result of this
research shows that think aloud strategy can improve students’ reading
comprehension at MTs Negeri 1 Kunir Blitar.
