The Correlation Between Motivation, Vocabulary Mastery and Translation Ability of the Tenth Grade Students of Senior High School 2 Kediri.
This study is aimed at determining the correlation between students’ motivation and their vocabulary mastery, students’ motivation and translation ability, as well as students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability. 62 students of SMAN 2 Kediri took a part in this study.
There are three instrument used in this study; motivation questionnaire, vocabulary mastery test, and translation ability test. However, the researcher adopted all of the instrument from the previous studies. Questionnaire of motivation was adopted from thesis of Listiyanti (2014). For vocabulary mastery test was adopted from Paul Nation vocabulary size test (2012). The translation ability test, the researcher was adopted story of “Malin Kundang” from the book with the title “Bahasa Inggris / Kementrian Budaya dan Pendidikan Edisi Revisi 2017”.
Upon obtaining the whole data needed, the researcher uses Pearson Correlation Product Moment formula is used as well as Microsoft Excel 2016 to calculate the data. The Pearson Correlation Product Moment formula is used to determine the correlation students’ motivation, with their vocabulary mastery and their translation ability. Meanwhile, Ms. Excel is used to computing the mean of each scoring aspect.
The result shows that correlation between students’ motivation and vocabulary mastery was showed the number of sig. 2 tailed (0.895) and the Pearson correlation is (r = - 0.016) it was very low correlation and it was not significant. The correlation coefficient between motivation and translation ability was showed low correlation with the value (r = 0.278) and its significant because the number of sig. 2 tailed (0.016). While the correlation coefficient of vocabulary mastery and translation ability is (r = 0.284) it means that low correlation and the value of sig 2 tailed is (r = 0.014) it was significant.
