The Effectiveness of Using Group Discussion Strategy on Writing Hortatory Exposition Texts to the Eleventh Graders of SMAN 1 Kediri.
This study is to find out whether the use of group discussion strategy in teaching writing is effective or not. The researcher used group discussion strategy in improving students’ writing skill. The aims of this experimental research are: to show if there is significant difference in the achievement and describe how well group discussion contribute to the students’ skill in writing hortatory exposition texts.
This thesis is an experimental research. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Kediri. The sample of this research is two classes which are divided into control group (XI LM B, 28 students) and experimental group (XI LM A, 28 students).This study employed a quasi experimental research. The instrument that is used in collecting data is a test. The result data is computed from student writing. And then the researcher calculated the test using ANCOVA to know whether there was significant difference between the experimental group and the control group.
The analysis result shows that both groups have different mean score after treatment. From the calculation, in the pre-test the mean score of the experimental group was 78.86 and the mean score of the control group is 78.29. In post-test the mean score of the experimental group was 84.14 and the mean score of the control group is 80.86. It shows that the experimental group has higher mean score than the control group. So, it is concluded that using group discussion strategy is effective in teaching writing hortatory exposition text. The result of statistical computation by ANCOVA. From the output, it can be seen the result of significance from group is 0.018, it is lower than 0.05 (0.018 < 0.05). Since the significance value was smaller than 0.05 statistically there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. It means that, there is any significant difference in the achievement between the students who were taught hortatory exposition through group discussion and the students who were taught hortatory exposition without group discussion and group discussion is effective in teaching writing hortatory exposition text at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Kediri in academic year of 2017/2018.
