Code Switching used by Thai Students of IAIN Kediri in Daily life.
In bilingual education, Thai students are largely dictated by the need to communicate effectively and appropriately. Therefore, the code switching occurs at any ordinary conversation in everyday life. With regard to the phenomenon, the study was conducted. The purpose of this study was to determine the type of code switching used by Thai students of IAIN Kediri in everyday life and the research question of the participants switch languages.
This study uses descriptive qualitative because the researcher describes deeply code switching used by Thai students of IAIN Kediri and the reasons of the participants switching language. The subject of this study is Thai students of IAIN Kediri. Data were collected though audio-recording of Thai student’s conversation in daily life. The data analyzed based on the topic that triggered the code switching.
The results show that situational switching and metaphorical switching are the types of code switching used by Thai students of IAIN Kediri in daily life whereas situational switching is more dominant. The reason of the Thai students switch their language immersion. The reasons of the students switching their language form the most dominant to the lowest respectively are (1) prestige, (2) to substitute the unknown or missing word in the target language, (3) the target language is difficult or complicated, (4) Express identity, (5) English is not the only language instruction used by Thai students, (6) To be the alternative way to practice the target language, and (7) Depends on the topic introduced. Prestige is the most dominant reason of the Thai students of IAIN Kediri in daily life switching their languages.
