The Effectiveness of Scattergories Board Game in Teaching Vocabulary Mastery at SMK Islam Kunjang.
Vocabulary is one of the most important aspect for foreign language learners to acquire since it is critical in conveying the meaning of a message. Without a sufficient vocabulary, one cannot communicate effectively or express his or her ideas in both oral and written form. The objective of the study is to know whether the students taught by using scattergories board game get better vocabulary mastery than those taught by using non Scattergories board game technique to the tenth grade students at SMK Islam Kunjang.
This research design of this study is the quasi experimental research. The subject of this research is the students at the tenth grade students of SMK Islam Kunjang in the second semester in the academic year of 2017/2018 consisting 44 students. The subjects are divided into two classes, A class as experimental group
and B class as control group. Class A is taught by using Scattergories board game and B class is taugh by using word wall. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test at experimental and control group. The result of the test was analyzed by using ANCOVA through SPSS.
The result of this study showed that the distribution of the data in the research is normal. It can be proven by the result of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test showed that the significant value (p) > alpha (α), with p (0.200) > α (0.05). Meanwhile, the Levene’s test showed that F (1.70) = 2.717, p = 0.107. The result gave evidence that p (0.107) > α (0.05). It means that the variance of the experimental and control group is equal across groups. Then, the homogeneity of regression test (slope) showed that there was no interaction between the covariate
and the independent variable. It was proven by the result of p > α, with p (0.127) > α (0.05). The last ssumption is there was relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable. It can be proven by the result of testing was F (0.405) = 17.676, with p (0.001) < α (0.05). It means that there is a relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable.
While, the result of the output ANCOVA showed the significant value was p(0.087)>α(0.05). Because of the significant value is higher than 0.05, there was not enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, and the alternative hypothesis was rejected. Based on the finding, the researcher concluded that teaching word wall is more effective than using scattergories board game technique.
