An Analysis on grammatical errors in descriptive writing of the tenth grade students of MAN Prambon Nganjuk
Grammatical error is difficult to avoid by every learner. It also happened in EFL students. One of the causes is the lack of knowledge of grammatical rules. It also happens in writing descriptive text. Therefore, analyzing the errors is one of appropriate ways to use to show the true proficiency level of target language that students learn at a particular time. By conducting an analysis on grammatical errors, teacher can find the most frequent of errors which is often made by students. Then teachers can arrange the more effective and interesting strategies in teaching grammatical rules. As the result, the errors can be minimized. The objectives of this study are to find out the common errors and the possible causes of error in writing descriptive text made by the tenth grade students of MAN Prambon Nganjuk. The research was conducted by using basic qualitative method because the data of this research is in the form of sentences and paragraphs. The instrument of this study is the researcher himself. In this study, the researcher acts as the planner, data collector, analyst, and finally reporter of the research finding. In addition, the subject of this research is all the tenth grade students of MAN Prambon, Nganjuk because the students had studied descriptive text in the last semester. The instruments used for this research is writing test and the data were collected through the students writing assignment. In order to get data needed, the researcher used a writing test to describe a picture in descriptive text. To analyze the data, researcher uses some steps. There are collection of a sample of learner language, identification of errors, description of errors, explanations of errors and error evaluation. The finding shows that In describing the types of errors, which occur in the students’ sentences. They are analyzed based on the surface strategy taxonomy. It is found four common errors. And, the result of the research is conducted by researcher shows that most of students often made errors in all gramatical understanding, particularly in intralingual errors. So, it can be inferred that intralingual errors occur in the students’ sentences is caused by lacks of grammatical understanding, and interlanguage errors occur because students more likely translate Bahasa Indonesia pattern into English without taking notice of grammar.
