The analysis on taboo words used in tim miller's deadpool
Taboo words and its function uttered by the characters in Deadpool movie will be investigated in this research. The movie is about an antihero Deadpool hunts the man who nearly destroyed his life while also trying to reunite with his love, Vanessa. The objective of this research is to identify the types and the functions of taboo words uttered by the characters in the movie. This research employed descriptive qualitative as the method for describing theexisting condition in the movie. In addition, this research also used quantitative methodto support the interpretation of data by presenting fixed percentages in numerical form.The data were in the form of utterances, while the contexts of the data were thedialogues uttered by the characters in the movie. The sources of the data were the videoof Deadpoolmovie and its transcript. The data were collected by selecting dialoguescontaining taboo words after watching the video and matching the transcript with thevideo carefully. The primary instrument of this research was the researcher, while thesecondary instrument was a data sheet. The results of this research are stated as follows. Firstly, six types of nine types taboo words occur in the characters’ utterances in Deadpool movie. They are profanity, sexuality, vulgarity, insult, scatological referents, and offensive slang. From 102 data found in the movie, offensive slang has thebiggest number of occurrence. Offensive slang is the most appearing type in this movie because it is considered to be the most effective way to insult someone. The charactersin Deadpoolmovie frequently utter obscenity to show their disrespect toward the addressee. Moreover, offensive slang is used by the characters in the movie to debase otherpeople’s pride. The smallest number of taboo words’ type is insult. Insult becomesthe least occurence in the movie because the characters do not find that epithet caneffectively hurt other people’s pride. The characters tend to use insult to be provocative to someone to provoke certain response with a certain taboo word. Secondly, fourfunctions of taboo words are found in the series namely to show contempt, to drawattention to oneself, to be provocative, and to mock authority. The most appeared function is to draw attention to oneself and the last is to be provocative. Most of the charactersuse taboo words when they want to show their disrespect toward others. To be provocative appears 12 times to provoke certain response from the listeners.
