Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Using Crossword Puzzles At The Eight Grade Students of Smp Islam Gedong Sari. English Department, Faculty of Education
This study focuses on the Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery Using Crossword Puzzles at the Eight Grade Students of Smp Islam Gedong Sari. Based on preliminary of the study, found that most of the students have difficulty to remember new vocabularies that they have learned and still have less vocabulary. The subject of the study was the 8th grade SMP Islam Gedong Sari, academic year 2016-2017. There are 18 students. The design of the study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). Based on Taggart and Kemmis, the procedure of CAR are planning, implementing of action, observation and reflecting. To collect data, the researcher used some instruments such as observation checklists, field notes, pre-test and post-test. The result of this research showed that the students’ average score in pretest 59, 72, the average score in post-test 1 was 66, 38 and the average score in post-test 2 was 75, 55. The studensts’ percentage in pre-test was 22, 22 the percentage in post-test 1 was 50% and the percentage in post-test 2 was 77, 77%. From the result, the students’ responses showed that they were interested in learning vocabulary through using crossword puzzle. Moreover, the students’ achievement in pre-test and post-test showed a significant improvement. So, the researcher concluded that using crossword puzzle at 8th grade of SMP Islam Gedong Sari can improve students’ vocabulary.
