The Effectiveness of Story Completion Strategy to Teach Speaking to the Tenth Grader of SMAN 6 Kediri
Teaching the spoken language is the most difficult problem much more than the other skill. The problem is not only found in the beginner but also the higher level students. They can understand English well, but when they are asked to speak they cannot perform well. Therefore the teacher should pay more attention on those features that reflect the students’ speaking ability such as factors of pronunciation, intonation, fluency, choice of words and effectiveness of communication should be taken into consideration. To reach the success in teaching and learning process, teacher need teaching strategies to solve the problems it is an alternative strategy to teach speaking, this research proposed Story completion strategy to teach speaking. The aim of this study is to know whether the students who are taught by using Story Completion strategy have better achievement than the students who are taught with conventional method.
The research design of this study is a quasi experimental. The subject of this research is the tenth grader of SMAN 6 Kediri. The researcher takes X1 and X3 as the sample of this research. This research is done by comparing two groups, experimental and control group, which is consist of 30 students in each group. The experimental group is conducted at class X1 that are taught by using story completion and control group at X3 that are taught without using story completion. In this research, the researcher give pre-test and post-test both of the groups. Then the result is calculated by using ANCOVA.
The result of pre-test shows that the mean score of experimental group is 56.17 while in control group is 52.50. In the result of post-test, the mean score of experimental group is 70.50, while control group is 59.83. It can be seen that the result of post test from the experimental group shows higher performance than the control group. The result of statistic computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant value is 0.000 < 0.05. Since the significant value is lower than 0.05, statistically there is enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, it means that teaching speaking using story completion is effective to develop students’ speaking skill of the tenth grade of SMAN 6 Kediri
