An Analysis Of Gender Streotypes in Pictures In English Textbooks of the Bridge English Competence
Textbook is one of the pivotal role in teaching-learning procces . This is because textbook consists of the picture that contain gender bias . However, the objectives of the research are to know how is gender depicted in visual ilustration of junior high school English textbook and also to know in what way does the gender sterotype in visual illustration of Junior High School English differs among the grades.
The method of this research is qualitative design of content analysis. The instrument of the research is the human instrument. The data sources used in the research are textbooks of The Bridge English Competence. The data collection of the research are choosing the picture that contain gender stereotypes.. Then, looking the content of the materials that contains of gender stereotypes. The steps to analyse the data are making the data including utilizing, sampling, recording and reducing the data then inducting and also narating the data with the research questions.
The result of the research is that there are three categories that use in this research. There are gender representation in occupation, gender potrayal in activities, and also gender-role stereotype. There are different depictation between man and also female in every categories.gender representation in occupation appears in grade 7 for a physical work and also less physical work also appears in grade 8. Gender potrayal in activities also describes in these textbooks. Hard activities also describe in grade 8 and soft activities also describe in grade 7. Gender-role stereotype also describes in grade 8 as a role of the woman as a wife and also describe in grade 7 as a husband.
