The Analysis of Symbols in poems written by William Wordsworth
This research aims to explore the form of symbols and how they are employed in the poem of William Wordsworth. Symbol is used in literature to give the literary work meaning that goes beyond what is evident to the reader. Symbols in literature helps in giving the piece of writing feeling and mood without the writer having to actually spell out the same. This analysis attempts to explain further the problems of how symbols use in poem written by William Wordsworth.
The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research to analyze the symbol in five of William Wordsworth’s poems. The researcher uses paraphrase method to uncover the content of William Wordsworth’s poems and the symbols found in it. After finishing the paraphrases, the researcher gets the unity of intact story from the poems. Then, the researcher concludes symbols existed in William Wordsworth’s poems through keywords that available on the poems based on Haley’s theory.
The result of this research shows that in five of William Wordsworth’s poem contain some symbols, those are: 1) Symbols that existed in “Daffodils” are energy, being, terrestrial, cosmos, human, living, and object. 2) Symbols that existed in “The Solitary Reaper” are being, terrestrial, object, and human. 3) Symbols that existed in “Strange Fits of Passion Have I Known” are human, living, being, energy, and terrestrial. 4) Symbols that existed in “London 1802” are being, object, substance, cosmos and terrestrial. 5) Symbols that existed in “We Are Seven” are being, human, object, living, cosmos and substance.
