The use of google translate by english department students of stain kediri / Hidayatul Mubtadiin

There are many translation tools that we know, but most of English Department students of STAIN Kediri use Google Translate as a tool that can help them to finish their translation problems. This study investigates why, when, how the English Department students of STAIN Kediri in using Google Translate and also the percentages of the students who use Google Translate for doing their translation assignments.The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative, and it takes randomly 150 students for the second, fourth and sixth semester as sample in this research. The researcher uses two instruments to get the data, they are questionnaire and interview in which to know the usage of Google Translate. The researcher also takes 9 students as sample in interview. Based on the descriptions it is known that there are some patterns of the usage of Google Translate by the students, they are about the reason of the students in using Google Translate: 12 (8%) students say that they are satisfied when they use Google Translate, 4 (2,7%) students say that the output of Google Translate is correct and good grammatically, 32 (21,3%) students say that they use Google Translate because they are lazy to use manual dictionary and it is a word to word translation, and 66 (44%) students say that they more believe to use manual dictionary than Google Translate. The second problem is about the timing of the students in using Google Translate, there are 27 (18%) students say that they use Google Translate when their assignment is approach in the deadline and they do not have much time to translate it by using manual dictionary, so they use Google Translate, 68 (45,3%) students say that they use manual dictionary if they do their assignments in the home, 35 (23,3%) students say that they use Google Translate just rarely. The last is about the way of the students in using Google Translate, there are 7 (4,7%) students say that they use Google Translate by sentence to sentence, 7 (4,7%) students say that they use Google Translate by word to word, 24 (16%) students say that they check the output of Google Translate by using manual dictionary, 25 (16,7%) students say that they always checking the output of Google Translate first before they submit it to the lecturer. The last is about the percentages of Google Translate users in English Department Students of STAIN Kediri, and the result is the students who use Google Translate are 144 students (96%), and the students who do not use Google Translate are 6 students (4%).
