The use of turn-4-review gameboard to improve the reading skill of the students of mts abdulloh sukoanyar mojo kediri / Mochammad Fahmi Toha
Key words: Cooperative Learning, Turn-4-Review Gameboard.
This research was conducted in the second year students of MTs Abdulloh Mojo Kediri in the academic year 2013-2014. The purpose of this research was to find out wether and how the use of Turn-4-Review GameBoard could improve the students’ reading skill. Based on the preliminary study, the researcher found some problems which were caused by the students and the teacher. The first; the students have poor quality of English vocabulary. The second; there is no specific method to teach reading. The third, the students’ motivation is very low. The fourth, reading is still dominated by teacher in the class. The causes from the teacher were: the first, the teacher does not certain strategies in teaching reading yet. The second, the teacher has accustomed to ask the students for doing the students’ work sheet. To overcome the problems, the researcher applied Turn-4-Review GameBoard in teaching Reading. This research is intended to describe how Turn-4-Review GameBoard can improve the reading skill of the eighth grade students of MTs Abdullah Mojo Kediri.
The design of study was collaborative classroom action research (CAR) which the researcher was assisted by a collaborative teacher (a colleague) in conducting the research. This action research was conducted in two cycles. The procedure of the research consisted of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In collecting data, the researcher used observation checklists, field notes, reading test, questionnaire and interview guide..
From the result of the research shows that Turn-4-Review GameBoard could improve the students’ reading skill. The students’ interest to read English text improved after the implementation of the action of Turn-4-Review GameBoard. The improvement was shown by the increase of the percentage of the students’ achievement in reading activities. The percentage of the students who scored minimal 75 in cycle 1 was 52.4% or 22 of the students got success. In cycle 2 increased up to 83. 3% or 35 of the students got success. Based on the criteria of success, those gained has achieved it. It shown that there was a significant improvement of the students’ reading skill after the research was conducted.
Based on the result of the study, the researcher conclude that students’ reading skill can be improved through Turn-4-Review GameBoard. Therefore, it is recommended that the teacher should apply Turn-4-Review GameBoard in teaching reading.
