Communication strategies used by second semester students of english departement of stain kediri / Milka Lutfiana Fatin

English as an international language is mostly used around the world. Nowadays, English is one of important subjects for all Indonesian students in Indonesia. Because of it the researcher tries to identify the types of communication strategies used by second semester students of English department of STAIN Kediri when make conversation with their friends.The subjects of the study are the second semester students of English department of STAIN Kediri when making conversation with their friends. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher uses two instrument who does all of the process in finishing the thesis. Recorded is on of part instrument that researcher used to identify the types of communication strategies. The researcher take a record of the conversation during the conversation occurred. The result of the study shows the types of communication strategies used by second semester of English department of STAIN Kediri in their conversation with their friends. The types of communication strategies which are used by second semester students of English department of STAIN Kediri in the conversation consist of five types and sub types of communication strategies. The first is avoidance. In this type the communication strategies used by student are topic avoidance and message abandonment. The second is paraphrase. In this type the students just used approximation. The third is conscious transfer. In this type students used language switch, the fourth is appeal to assistance, and the fifth mime. The researcher then suggests the students to learn English more, add their English vocabulary and applies it in communication. Mastering vocabulary and improve their ability in speaking by learning the competencies to get the fluent English speaking. They should practice speaking English regularly and understand about the communication strategy to avoid misunderstanding when they convey the message sent and to bridge the gap in conversation. It is done in order to the conversation can run smoothly.
