Efl teachers’ perception of the 2013 curriculum / Tria Rosyida

The government of Indonesia recently launched the new curriculum, namely the 2013 Curriculum.The 2013 curriculum, a means of integrating values systems, knowledge, and skills, has orientation on developing the learners’ competencies, which gives priorities on the learning experiences to enhance the values of competitiveness and build prime characters. As the curriculum changed, the English language teaching in each curriculum also changed.To gain successful implementation of the curriculum reform in English language teaching, the government and the EFL teachers have to cooperate in order to achieve its goals.Many factors may affect the implementation of curriculum change; nevertheless, it is undeniable that teachers are the key for curriculum reform success. Teachers play a fundamental role due to their knowledge, belief and perceptions. Minjeong Park points out that ‘teachers’ perception can be thought of as their perspective on how one engages in pedagogical practice’. It is assumed that what teachers think will determine what teachers do, and consequently will determine the curriculum implementation success.Therefore, this study aims to find out EFL teachers’ perception of the 2013 Curriculum sinceEFL teachers’ perceptionis very important in determining the success of English language teaching covered by the 2013 Curriculum.
This study used descriptive research design in a form of survey researchin which it used quantitative approach. The population of this study was 52 EFL teachers who teach in 10 senior high schools in Kediri Town, whereas the sample of this study were 45 (86,54%) EFL teachers. The writer used questionnaire as the main instrument to collect the data. Out of 45 distributed questionnaires, 25 questionnaires were returned. She analyzed the data descriptively using descriptive statistics.
The result shows that positive responses were given for over 91.67% for the 2013 Curriculum concept subscale. It means that most of them agree and have positive response toward the concept of the 2013 Curriculum.For content standard, positive responses were given for over 66.67% of the statements in this category. Regarding with process standard, 100% statements elicited a positive response. It means that all teachers agree and have positive response toward the process standard of ELT in the 2013 Curriculum while for assessment standard, positive responses were given for over 66.67%.Based on the findings of this study, the researcher hopes that it might be useful to EFL teachers and the government to enhance the realization of the curriculum change.
