The correlation between the use of language learning strategies and english proficiency / Sefti Muvita Sari

Language learning strategies are involving the learner in taking some form of any specific techniques that will make the learning easier or more successful improving the learners’ progress in developing skills in a second or foreign language. The use of language learning strategies leads to the better proficiency. The objective of this study is to know whether or not the learners who have more variety on the use of language learning strategies have the higher English proficiency. The research design is correlational since it identifies the correlation between the use of language learning strategies and English Proficiency. The population of this study is eighth semester or above, students of English Department in STAIN Kediri 2013 who have passed TOEFL course 2013. the total is about 118 students. The number of the sample in this study is 58 students taken from the class A and B of TOEFL course 2013. There are two instruments used, the adapted LSUII for assessing the laguage learning strategies and TOEFL score. The result shows that there is no significant correlation between the use of language learning strategies and English proficiency (0.069 > α 0.05). Therefore, the use of language learning strategies cannot be used to predict the level of English proficiency
