This study deals with code mixing in text messages through mobile phone. The objectives of this study are to know the types of code mixing found in text messages sent by English Department students and lecturers of STAIN Kediri and to know the reason of the use of code mixing in the text messages sent by English Department students and lecturers of STAIN Kediri. The writer uses descriptive qualitative approach as method for analyzing the data. The instrument of the data collection is documentation in which the data are gathered from the messages sent or received by the mobile phone of the English Department students and lecturer of STAIN Kediri and questionnaire which are given to the sender of the code mixing-text message. Then, they are analyzed with the procedures proposed by Sudaryanto (1993) namely IntralingualPadan Method. The results of the study show that: (1) there are three types of code mixing used by the senders when sending their messages to the receiver, namely insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization code mixing as proposed by Pieter Muysken (2000). It was identified that in the insertion code mixing is in the form of single noun, adjective, phrase, verb, adverb, and interjection, and (2) there are seven reasons for bilinguals why they mix their languages. The seven reasons are as follows: (a) talking about a particular topic, (b) quoting somebody else, (c) being emphatic about something, (d) interjection (inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), (e) repetition used for clarification, (f) expressing group identity, and (g) intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. However, based on the research findings, it is concluded that the type of code mixing that mostly found in the text messages is insertion and the reason of the text message sender to mix the code is they want to talk about particular topic. Furthermore, it is suggested to do further studies about code mixing, particularly focusing on the grammatical and psycholinguistic aspects. It is also suggested to the text message sender to keep the ways they send messages in order to enable them keeping efficiency in texting.
