Keywords: conversational implicature, flouting maxims, violating maxim, dialogue.
In order to communicate well with the readers, novel authors try to direct the readers to understand the general life stories of the novel. They sometimes insert some dialogues to complete or support their works. The researcher found that a case of creating implicature by flouting and violating maxims in the dialogue is used by the main character in The Da Vinci Code novel. This research was conducted to answer two research problems; (1) What types of the conversational implicatures in the dialogue of the main character of The Da Vinci Code novel? (2) How are the cooperative principle maxims violated and/or flouted in the dialogue of the main character available in the Da Vinci Code Novel?. Those research problems had purposes to find out the types of conversational implicature and to describe how maxims are flouted and violated in the dialogue of the main character to communicate with other character and vice versa.
A descriptive qualitative method was used because the data are in the form of words which are explained descriptively and briefly by using Grice’s theory of implicature. The data are the main characters’ dialogue that in The Da Vinci Code novel. Based on the analysis in research findings, the researcher found 40 conversations which contain conversational implicature. The generalized conversational implicatures appears 17 and the flouted maxim of quantity appears 6 times, maxim of manner appears 5 times, maxim of quality and relation both appears once. While the violated of maxim manner appears 4 times, maxim quantity both appear once. The particularized conversational implicature appears 23 times and the flouted maxim of manner appears 5 times, both maxim of quality and relation appear 4 times and maxim of quantity appears twice. While the violated maxim of quantity and manner both appear 3 times, maxim of quality appears twice and maxim of relation appears once.
Finally, it is suggested that this research will be one of additional references in the field of Pragmatics. In addition, the next future researchers can study implicature more complete by using different subject and theory.
