"Key Words: learning strategies and vocabulary.
Language plays very important role in human life. We use language to communicate, to express our idea, feeling, and our thought. In relation to language components, vocabulary is more than words. One’s vocabulary certainly consists of words and meaning. Vocabulary is the collection of word that an individual knows. Learning strategies are the particular approaches or techniques that the learners employ to try to learn a second language; they can be behavioral. The learners are typically problem-oriented. That is, learners employ learning strategies when they are faced with some problems, such as how to remember a new word in reading. Based on the explanation, the researcher is interested in undertaking a research that deals with “The students’ strategies in coping with new vocabulary in reading in the fourth semester’s students of English Department”.
This study is conducted by using a descriptive qualitative design. This research is designed to obtain information concerning the status of phenomenon and directed toward determining the nature of situation as it exists at the time of the study. The subjects of the research are the student of English department in STAIN Kediri. The instrument of this study is the researcher conducts an interview with the students to complement their response. Then, the researcher takes the findings and draws the conclusion based on the data found.
The research findings are the students’ difficulties and their strategies in reading English text with new vocabulary in reading and the student’s strategies in coping with new vocabulary in reading. From the data of the research finding that every students has different answer in their strategies in coping with new vocabulary in reading. The strategies categorized into three parts namely Social affective strategy, Meta-Cognitive strategy and Cognitive strategies. There are 53 students who used social strategies, 3 students who used meta-cognitive strategies and students who used cognitive strategies is 53 students. It means that the students often use social strategies and cognitive strategies in coping with new vocabulary in reading. The students prefer used social affective strategies and cognitive strategies because they can interact with other people when they faced a confusing point such as asking question, asking for clarification and verification.
