A comparative and contrastive analysis between "EMMA" by Jane Austen and "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte

Literature is the art of the works that can be in the forms of poetry, plays, short story, and novel. It consists of detail information and understandable more in characterization, conflict, and theme that happens in the story. The novels are widely published around the world and appear in the 19th era and the golden age of the British Empire. Besides, both female novelists English whose works of romantic and so on. Based on the explanation, the researcher is interested in conducting the research entitled: “A Comparative and Contrastive Analysis between “Emma” by Jane Austen and “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte”. The purpose of the research is to get the similarities and differences on characterization, conflict, and theme of the main characters in both novels.
This research uses descriptive to get the similarities and differences on the novels. The subjects of this research are “Emma” by Jane Austen and “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. The instrument of this study is the researcher himself and uses many sources from literature books, internet and the others related to this study. Then, the researcher takes the findings and draws the conclusion based on the data found.
The founding of this study is that there are some similarities and differences between both novels. The similarities of both novels are on the main characters’ characterization, both have the similar characterization such as protagonist round character, intelligent, and struggle. Regarding conflict, both has similar social and psychological conflict such as their desire to get their fantasy and getting emotional contrast during creating their desire. Concerning theme, both have similar theme, for instance social class and gender inequality. Meanwhile, the differences of both novels are Emma and Jane’s characteristics. Emma has arrogant, stubborn and contrast to Jane Eyre’s dissimilar characteristics those are brave, hardship, and independent. Regarding Emma’s dissimilar conflicts, such as interaction and miscommunication to the other characters’ curiosity while Jane dissimilarities are elemental conflict, hardship and sorrow bring to create Jane’s conflicts. Concerning dissimilar theme, Emma’s Dissimilar theme od miscommunication, marriage, social interaction such as visits and ball are unlike Jane Eyre’s dissimilar theme, such as family, religion, internal, and external beauty.
