The nurses are demanded able to have a good communication skill. They should able to communicate with his or her patients from many places, local or international. Because of it, the students of nursing should able to have enough knowledge in English for nursing care. It purposed to support their future work.
This study purposed to describe the teaching of English at Academy of Nursing (AKPER) Dharma Husada Kediri, they are pervaded in five aspects (1) the objectives of study, (2) the materials, (3) the methods, (4) the evaluation, and (5) students’ achievement.
The subjects of the study are the teacher and the second grade students of AKPER Dharma Husada Kediri. The instruments used are observation, interview and documentation. The observation is done during the process the teaching of English to the second grade students, the interview is done after the observation has been done, and documentation is done to together with interview. The data gotten from observation are analyzed and selected based on its topics.
This study showed that (1) the objectives of study the English teaching at AKPER Dharma Husada Kediri is to enable the students using English language in their future work, (2) some of the materials used in the teaching English to the students of nursing are taken from Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing (Brunner and Suddarth, 1996), Medical Surgical Nursing: A Nursing Process Approach (Donna D., Marilyn V.), Medical Surgical Nursing: A Psychophysiology Approach, English for the Medical Professions (Long, Barbara C. 1992), English in Nursing-Midwifery Science and Technology, (Nursalam, 2002), and English Point Center (EPC), (3) the methods used in the teaching English for nurses and TOEFL are kind of Communicative language Teaching (CLT), (4) evaluation is done from some forms; they are UTUL (written evaluation), TOEFL, Duty, Seminar, and Soft Skill, (5) the average scores of second grade students in the Middle Semester Evaluation (UTS) 2010/ 2011 Academic Year in English language is poor since it does not meet the standard minimum of scores.
