Self-selected in Extensive Reading: EFL college students' perception
When the learners do the extensive reading (ER), they are practicing the skill of reading with the aim of enjoying the reading without conciously knowing they are learning. One principle of ER is that learners become indpendent readers. It means that the learners are comfortable with their own preference. Thus, the learners are not bored when they read. For the learners who have a good reading habit, they will not mind reading a long text. However, it will be different for learners who are not accustomed to reading. Whereas, reading a lot is nedeed to support their study. Being curiosity about reading needs to be built first through these principle. Therefore, the writer focuses on writing about self-selectd theme in ER with regard to novels and newspaper articles. The purpose of this study is to find out the learners' preference themes as a strategy in order to get successful extensive reading and to investigate the learners' perceptions about self-selected themes for extensive reading with regard to newspaper articles and novels.
This study applied a quantitative survey design. This study investigated the learners' preferene themes and how the learners' perceptions of self selected theme for extensive reading course are. The lecturer of extensive reading course suggested some kinds of text (short story, newspaper articles, novel, journals, etc) as a reading materials for their learners. This study focused only on newspaper articles and novel. The writer collected the data by using two questionnaires. First questionnaire is about learners preference themes which included list of themes and the participants were asked to rank the 5 most preferred themes. Next questionnaire is about the learners' percetions toward self-selected theme which provided several opinions chosen by the participants. The writer analyzed the questionnaire outcomes into descriptive text. The population of this study was learners of the fourth semester of English Departement in the academic year of 2019/2020 at IAIN Kediri. The sample was 100 learners who were taken randomly.
The result of this study showed thatthe majority of participants selected the theme about "Life Story" in choosing novels, and about "Learning Style" in choosing newspaper articles. Besides, participants (n=43) selected the item "Helpful" in choosing newspaper articles and novels. Mostly, participants select the item "Enjoy Reading English" when they did self-selected theme. The present study also investigated whether learners had difficulties in choosing suitable newspaper articles and novels in reading English. The results revealed that between novels and newspaper articles are slightly different in numbers. Both of them alsohad the same level of difficulties for EFL, learners.
