A case study on Thai English students' learning at IAIN Kediri in the academic year 2019/2020
Thailand is now entering the ASEAN Community, therefore English is practically a medium tool for everyday communication and for careers. Many of Thai students come to Indonesia without good of English knowledge because none of them can communicate in English. However, some of them entering in English department in IAIN Kediri adjusting difficulties to the new environment and lack of expected progress in learning English and encounter in culture aspects of Indonesian and Java. This paper makes an effort to convey the reason why most students cannot improve their English, as it should be, Thai students English language learning problems, and their learning strategies also be discussed. This research is intended to study of Thai English students' language learning and learning strategies of Thai students who study in English department of LAIN Kediri.
The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative research that would have interview section and questionnaire. The population of this study is the first year of academic studies 2019-2020. The researcher took 7 Thai students who learn in IAIN Kediri. The instruments of obtaining data in descriptive qualitative method are the researcher analyze from their interview section and result of questionnaire.
on the interview section shows that, most of 7 of Thai students having problems in shyness in asking teachers, speaking the language up, and misunderstanding the language. In learning strategy of Thai students based on questionnaire shows that 7% asking friends, 1% looking at the examples from friend's work, 3%using Google translate, 4% learning Thai English teacher from YouTube, 5% listening English songs for practice listening, 3% Practicing speaking. In addition, the expectations of Thai students are able to speak English fluently, slow explanation and give more attention to the Thai students in understanding the lesson. Furthermore, the participants lack of the motivation in practicing for improving the English language skills.
