An Analysis of Speech Acts Used in USA President Candidate Debate 2016

Speech acts usualIy do not come alone. They may occur in ordered sequences of speech acts accomplished by one speaker or by subsequent speakers. Like a debate or speech they can not stand alone, they must had some item to completely this component. Without complete component some conversation can not be successfully. Speech Act Theory is concerned with the ways in which language can be used. The original from speech acts theory is fom Austin but was developed by Searle. So speech acts was analyze the used from language. They concerned about what the uasge from language when some speakers say something. If it had some specific meaning or not. In sort, a speech act means the acts done in the process of speaking In this research, the researcher wants to analyze US president candidate based on speech acts theory. The researcher wants to know how they express their feeling by using speech acts in debate candidate and what the function of speech acts that used as. The data in this research are speech, words which are saying by US president candidate which contain of speech acts. The instrument of this research is the researcher himself. The researcher spends the time to take hear the speech of US president candidate on youtube channel. The researcher also uses some source to support analysis better. In addition, the researcher uses some book, journal, and articles related the theory to support the analysis. According to Austin theory, the researcher classified the data with three types of speech acts. There are locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. After take the data by watching and trancribing the data from video and script the researcher finds some data was include on USA presidential debate. Researcher finds 69 data of speech act according Austin theory in this debate. There are 21 locutionary act, 25 perlocutionary act, and 23 illocutionary act. Perlocutionary is the most speech act types which used in this research. Perlocutionary act very usefull used in debate, because perlocutionary act normally have some effect to another speakers. Because this is debate, so the using of perlocutionary acts is more than another types of speech act according Austin theory.
