An Analysis on Move Structures in Undergraduate Thesis Abstracts of English Department of STAIN Kediri
Move is a functional point which must exist in any genre of writing. It aims at identifying the purpose of each stage in a text. Move structure is structure of each stage in a text. This thesis presents a study about the move structure that is found in undergraduate thesis abstracts of English department of STAIN Kediri academic year 2014-2015. The purpose of this study is to know what move structures which are used, what move structure which is mostly used, and how move structure is used in undergraduate thesis abstracts of English Department of STAIN Kediri. The data are 50 abstracts which were randomly selected and were analyzed descriptively. Hyland’s theory of five-move structure is mostly used in this study. The abstracts were first coded before being analyzed to find the move structures. The kinds, frequency, and position of moves used in the selected abstracts are presented. The study found that the move structures which are used in undergraduate thesis abstracts vary in 13 structures. The move structure that is mostly used in is four-move structure IPMPr (Introduction, Purpose, Method, Product) Structure. The move structures in undergraduate thesis abstracts in English Department of STAIN Kediri are used in various ways. There are 4 obligatory moves in undergraduate thesis abstracts in English Department of STAIN Kediri. They are Introduction, Purpose, Method, and Product. While, the move Conclusion is considered as optional move. Based on the result of this study, the writer concludes that the students still have limited knowledge about move structure in writing abstract. The writer suggests that teaching English writing should cover the topic about move structure in abstract and there should be revision in the Guidelines of writing abstract in STAIN Kediri based on the result of the present study.
