Critical Discourse Analysis on the Articles on Hard-line Muslim Groups in the Jakarta Post Website
Critical discourse analysis (CDA) on mass media is an interesting topic to be analyzed. The Jakarta Post media reports about articles on Hard-line Muslim groups. The authors claim this group with the intolerant group and anti-pluralist group. . It makes the reseacher interested in taking this subject. Therefore, this study focuses on critical discourse analysis on articles on Hard-line Muslim groupsIt is intended to find out how the articles are viewed from the text level, social cognition level and social context level. The aim of the research was to analyze the discourse issues that can be found at the text level, social cognition level and social context level. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative research because one of the best ways to analyze an article is through a qualitative method. Qualitative approach is used since the data of this research are in the form of words and sentences. This study is an analysis on the articles on Hard-line Muslim groups used Van Dijk analysis theory. In addition, each articles analysed based on three level there are; text level, social cognition level and social context level. The result of the study is the articles viewed from the text level that from the eight articles, in macrostructure and superstructure show the similar concept that only portrayed the result of actions without explanation about the cause of action. Semantically and syntactically there are imbalances in explaining the facts. Stylistic there are lexical choice used to control national values. Rhetorically there are quotations marks used to express uncertainty of authors. While the articles viewed from the social cognition level there is subjectivity of the authors in writing the articles. Meanwhile, viewed from the social context level, the articles contain negative representation of fundamentalist group in Indonesia. Based on the three levels of analysis above, it can be concluded that the articles on Hard-line Muslim groups presented by the Jakarta Post website prove the truth of the predictions of Western scientists that the current problem is the ethno-religious 'clash' issue. The results of this study suggest the readers to read critically without receive directly in understanding infomations.
