Writing is one of the basic language skills that should be mastered by senior high school students. By mastering this skill, they are expected to be able to express their feelings, thoughts and ideas in written form. Writing however is considered as the most difficult skill to be mastered. In the preliminary study conducted in Mei at SMAN 1 Plosoklaten, the researcher found that the students’ ability in writing was still far from the target expected. The students have low ability in writing skill; most students were passive and not enthusiastic in the learning and teaching process. Another problem is the students have no interest to write and it was making the difficult in writing. To overcome the problem, the researcher designed this study which is aimed at improving the students’ ability in writing using describing picture.

The research design is Classroom Action Research (CAR) and the sample of this study is the first grade students of SMAN 1 Plosoklaten Kediri in Academic Year of 2011/2012. There were 40 students of the first grade of SMAN 1 Plosoklaten Kediri. The researcher conducts two cycles and every cycle consists of planning, implementation, observation and reflection. Improving writing ability by using describing picture is an effective way in practicing writing.

The describing picture brought significant improvement on the students’ involvement and achievement. The improvement is shown by the increase of the percentage of the students’ achievement in writing. The result of the first cycle is showed by students’ average and achievement class. The students average 69 in first cycle. The result of the second cycles is improved. At the second cycle the class average is 80. As a result, describing picture can increase the first grade students’ writing skill of SMAN 1 Plosoklaten
