Testing and teaching are closely interrelated since testing is aimed to determine the achievement of the objective of education. It can be seen whether or not the teaching learning activities are successful. Teachers as a test constructor should be able to construct a good test so that the test is qualified enough to be given to the students. In fact the quality of the test made by the teacher is doubtful. It is still to be questioned whether the test is valid and reliable or not since the teachers rarely analyze and revise the test they made. Teachers use to prefer an unanalyzed and unrevised test items. Knowing this fact, the teachers should analyze their test so that they can know the quality of their test. By analyzing the test, the teachers will know which items can be used or which items should be revised.
Based on the reality above, the objective of this study is intended to know the quality of the test especially English Semester Test for Second Year, this quality is viewed from the characteristics of a good test: (1) Validity of test consist of : (a)Content validity, (b) construct validity, (c) concurrent validity, (4) reliability, (5) difficulty level, (6) Discrimination power.
The research in this study is designed as descriptive qualitative and quantitative researches. The data source of this research is about 180 answer sheet, and then it takes 25%, so the sample of this study is 45. The technique of taking sample is random sampling.
The result of this study leads to the conclusion that the teacher-made English test items on English semester test for second year students of MTs Negeri Grogol in academic year 2009/2010 is good. The finding of the research shows as follow: (1) The validity have high validity, because the result show that : (a) the content validity of this test is good because the all item provided in the test represents the material learned by the testee (b) the construct validity also good, because the test measure 3 language skills, are speaking skill, reading and writing skill (c) The concurrent validity is valid enough because of test is about 0,8993 it means the test is high validity (2) Reliability is adequate Reliable because the value of R is 0,899 it means the test is reliable, (3) Index of difficulty is fair (4) And discrimination of power has good discrimination
