The analysis of illocutionary act in president Donald Trump`s speech about Iran
This research was conducted in order to explore types of illocutionary act
based on theory proposed by Searle and function of illocutionary act based on
theory proposed by Leech. This study is a descriptive qualitative. The object of this
study is speech from President Donald Trump's speech about Iran. There are several
steps to analyze the data. First, the researcher observed the data by watching the
video from YouTube and collected the speech from nbcnews.com. After that, the
researcher classified data based on 5 types of illocutionary act (assertive, directive,
commissive, expressive, and declarative) and based on 4 function of illocutionary
act (competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive). And the last step is the
researcher try to find the hidden meaning behind the utterance in the speech.
The finding of analysis shows that There are 5 types of illocutionary act that have been founds in President Donald Trump's speech about Iran, they are assertive act (17), directive act (7), commissive act (5), expressive act (2), and declaration act (2). Furthermore, there are types of the utterances of assertive act, those are assert, boast, and state. Directive act includes command, suggest, advise, ask, beg. and order. The kind of commissive act is promise. Congratulating is type of expressive act. Declaration act include declare. In the other hand, there are 4 types of function of illocutionary act founds in President Donald Trump Iran's Speech, those are competitive (4), convivial (2), collaborative (26), and conflictive (1). Then, there are function of illocutionary that has been found such as competitive consisting of begging, asking, and ordering. Thanking and greeting is kind of convivial. Announcing, report, and assert includes in collaborative. Conflictive such as threatening.
Different from Suhair's research (2015) which the most dominant type of illocutionary act is commissive, this research the most dominant is assertive. Assertive can happen because the speaker wants to express about his belief and deliver the information about some utterance of affairs from speaker to listeners And also, in the line with Agus and Mukhlis research (2015) and this research, the most dominant function of illocutionary act is collaborative because the speaker often give his statement such as report, announcing or assert that people who listen into his speech like or not, agree or disagreeing and also the people get information about something that they still don't know to be known. Moreover, comparison theory of language and politic and also assertive as the most dominant types of illocutionary act in this research, we can see the language politic, speaker's and responsibility that has been used by Donald trump in his speech when h about his achievement in his speech.
