The Effectiveness Of Teaching Vocabulary By Using Word Walls Media At The Tenth Grade Of SMA Negeri 1 Purwoasri
Vocabulary is important for the students. On the other hand, the students always have difficulty when they get some new words because they do not know the meaning. The student’s difficulties are in understanding English text and conversation meaning. In this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using word walls to teach vocabulary at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Purwoasri. The design of this study is quasi experimental research. The subject of the research is the students at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 1 Purwoasri in the second semester in the academic year of 2016/2017 that consists of 60 students. The subjects are divided into two classes, class A as experimental group and class B as control group. Class A is taught by using word walls, and class B is taught by using teacher’s explanation. To collect the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test experimental and control groups. The result of the test was analyzed by using ANCOVA through SPSS 16. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant result (p) 0.023 < 0.05 level. Since the significant value was smaller than 0.05 statistically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis. It means that the students who were taught by using word walls got significantly better vocabulary mastery than the students who are taught by teacher’s explanation. Therefore, the hypothesis “the students who are taught by word walls get better vocabulary mastery than the students who are taught by using teacher explanation” is accepted. It can be concluded that the using of word walls is more effective than using teacher’s explanation.
