The Speaking Learning Strategies Used by Good Speakers of English Department of STAIN Kediri
This study investigates strategies for developing speaking skill used by students of English Education Department of State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Kediri. The purpose of this study is to describe the strategies in improving speaking skill.
Type of the research conducted by the researcher is descriptive qualitative. In this research, the object of the research is strategies for improving speaking skill which are used by 4 good speakers of English Education Department of STAIN Kediri. The data of this research are elicited by interview and documentation. The data include the good speakers’ speaking learning strategies in their self-study and in the classroom.
The result of this research shows that in self-study the good speakers applied the strategies proposed by O’Malley to improve their speaking skill. The first is meta-cognitive strategies, in meta-cognitive strategies the good speakers used advance organizer, self-management, functional planning, and delayed production. The second is cognitive strategies. In cognitive strategies the good speakers used repetition, resourcing, note taking and auditory representation. The third is socio-affective strategies. In socio-affective strategies the good speakers used cooperation.
The next result is about the speaking learning strategies used by good speakers in the classroom. In meta-cognitive strategies the good speakers used advance organizer, directed attention, selective attention, self-management, selfmonitoring, and self-evaluation. In cognitive strategies, the good speakers used translation, grouping, note taking, deduction, recombination, imagery, key word, contextualization, elaboration, transfer and inferencing. And in socio-affective strategies, the good speakers used question for clarification.
